Buy a pair of ice cleats. They slip over the soles of whatever shoes you are wearing and they have metal points that grip into the ice. On really icy surfaces even rough treaded boots will still slip, you need ice cleats. You can find them at sporting goods stores that sell hiking and climbing gear. They are also available at some shoe stores and at some drug stores (in the aisle with canes and assistance devices. My son uses them and hasn’t had any serious falls since buying them.
