What kind of climbing shoes should I get for indoor climbing?
Jimbo asked:
I’ve recently gotten into indoor climbing and I was wondering what kind of climbing shoes to get. Price isn’t an object. I know 5:10 is a good company but I don’t know of other companies that are good. They make so many different types, I have no idea what kind I should get. Any information is great. Thanks!

La Sportiva Solution climbing shoe would be your best shoe but it cost $154.99. A reliable climbing shoe for indoors that wont be to expesive is the mad rock flash climbing shoe. it will cost around $75 dollars.
A great website to find discount rock climbing shoes is
Vibram has some cool shoes- they can be pricy…
I personally like the fivefingers- my husband has a pair- not sure how the fivefingers will personally work for climbing- however Vibram does make climbing shoes-see links below.
Short answer
5.10 mocasyms.
Why?
Inexpensive, all terrain (from slab to roof), perfect beginner shoe. they’re a soft shoe, so they wont take very long to break in. they do stretch quite a bit. so i would say get them pretty small. they perform as well on plastic as they do on rock. good for routes and bouldering
Sportiva is alright, they dont have a good starter shoe though. i don’t recommend evolve or mad rock. they’re rubber isn’t very good as in there’s a reason they are so cheap.
As much as i could rave about mocasyms and how they are fantastic its really going to come down to what feels right for you. so there’s a few things to keep in mind when choosing a shoe for yourself
- different shoes stretch differently. it may not fit when you first try it on, but it could after a few hours/days of climbing.
- if you’re just starting out you don’t want a down turned shoe. its unnecessary and negatively affects your footwork in the long run.
- unfortunately the sport of climbing has a relatively small selection of shoe so don’t base your decision off your favorite colour or which ones look cooler. go for the ones that are the best for you.
- people at climbing stores will usually know their stuff. unlike say asking someone at wal-mart about a light bulb. so i encourage you to ask what shoes they wear and ask about their experiences, but again keep in mind that there is no ‘right’ shoe. it all comes down to what is going to work best for you.
- be sure that u don’t get them too small or even too big. they should be uncomfortable in the store but not the the point where u can feel your feet falling off due to lack of circulation.
hope that helps
