Today I’m wearing black socks and black shoes with navy blue pants, and I feel like it looks a little weird. However, there really aren’t navy blue shoes - at least I don’t own any. And is it ok to wear a striped shirt with pinstriped pants? Help!

Socks should match the pants, not the shoes. Stripes can be worn together, but it is difficult if you don’t have any eye for it. Basically, close stripes match with wide stripes, and neither stripe can be bold. MonaLisa Overdrive AM VT wannabe

well, if you’re gonna mix stripes, go for maximum contrast - if the pants are a narrow stripe, the shirt should have widely-spaced stripes, also light shirt with dark pants etc. That way it looks like you know exactly what you’re doing. I remember a bloke wearing a navy pinstripe suit jacket with charcoal pinstripe suit pants who couldn’t tell it wasn’t a matching suit.
Yes, match socks to trouser colour whenever possible, though black socks with navy pants is one of the few times you don’t have to worry about mixing black & navy otherwise. And of course black shoes go with everything (except white socks), though for some reason it annoys me when dudes wear black dress shoes with torn faded jeans, it seems to be saying “I’m just a regular guy, but I can buy & sell you, & put you out of business too.” But I digress. geraldine f
