ITFC asked:

I have a pair of Sidi shoes with SPD cleats that I wear with my road bike. Never a problem. I’ve started doing spin class with the same shoes and find my feet are hurting after class. Do people generally use the same shoes for both, or are their shoes that are better for spinning? Thanks.

It shouldn’t matter. Make sure the saddle is at the correct height and position.

Bob A is right. The shoes you have should work for spinning. Is the spinning bike a recumbent? Are you spinning with more pressure on the pedals than when you ride? I have had “hot spot” pain in the balls of my feet. I checked my shoes and found that upon inspection the insoles were wearing out. I replaced them with some gel insoles. You might try it and smile as you spin.

A “real” spinning bike will be drilled and tapped to take standard pedals, and in a good spinning class, taking your own pedals to use is a non-issue. The next time you go to class, take your pedals and shoes, and a wrench. If you ask the instructor, the worst that can happen is you might get told no.

You can use the same shoes, but I’d suggest buying a separate pair of shoes that are designed for spinning. On a road bike, you want to have little to no flex in the sole of the shoe to transfer as much of the power to the wheels as possible. With spinning, your efficiency isn’t as big a priority as you are just burning off energy. They are typically much more comfortable and breathable, and you won’t have to worry about damaging your carbon soles (if you have them). Check out the link below to see SIDIs spin shoe.
