Jackie asked:

I just went en pointe, and got my shoes yesterday. I have just been walking around and going on pointe and stuff, then I had a private lesson, where my teacher loosened the shoe a bit, by like breaking the sole so it would fit my arch. So we did spend some time breaking them in. But whenever I go on pointe, it really hurts my toenails, is this normal for your first time? Any advice appreciated!

I think this is VERY normal. Whenever i get new shoes they hurt for the first week or so, but because they are new for you it may take longer, but don’t worry, eventually when you get used to your shoes they will not hurt as much at all.

    Good Luck! soccer22dancer

It’s defintely completely normal. When you first start pointe, your feet will be sore and tired after class. For me, it lasted a few months, and as I got used to it, the pain slowly faded. It varies from person to person, but after a a month or so you should be fine. Your feet aren’t used to that kind of pressure, and you have to give them a little time to adjust. Blisters will be a problem for awhile, but you can use toe tape and spacers to get rid of the worst of it. Another good idea is to keep your toenails trimmed and always short, because the longer your toenail, the more it hurts. Just hang in there for awhile, and endure the pain until you get used to it.
    Hope this helps! Crysta

ive taken pointe for six years now and i dance for NYCB now. Your toes will always hurt but you just start to ignore it. Most of the beginner pain will go away but there will still be a little pain. mostly when you torwards the end of dancing Katy

yes! its incredibly normal. you’re on the tops of your toes-somewhere people are usually not meant to stand- so of course it should hurt. advice:
    1. it will get better, your feet will get used to it. my shoes stopped hurting after about 2 weeks, but its slower or faster for some people. but either way- youll get used to it

    2. cut your toenails as short as possible. otherwise you can get ingrown toenails or broken toenails or whatever. it helps alot for me. keep them short and youll actually be standing on the soft part of your toe without the nail digging into you.

    3. strengthen your feet. the stronger your feet are the more you can carry the pressure in your foot instead of your toes. feels way better. handsomemanintights

Ah, the joy of pointe shoes!!! that is my favorite kind of dance, both to watch and to do!
Yes, it is completely normal. My pain went away withing 3 weeks to a month of having pointe shoes. I wouldn’t worry about it, but as a precaution, make sure that you’re TOENAILS have been CUT! This will take a lot of the stress off of your toes and make it hurt less. also, make sure you use some padding in the shoe…that’ll take some of the stress off. Until you can really learn how to pull your weight out of your shoes, they will probably hurt more than you want, but as soon as you get a hang of pointe, you’ll be great!
    Hope this helped! ♥POINTE♥

This is a common thing…they will hurt ALL the time till you get used to them or break them in…its normal.Usually when a dancer starts with her first pointe shoes, the shoes will hurt. Sometimes the shoes are based on how hard or soft the shank is. One of my friends had to wear 3 layers of padding before they felt okay. Pointe shoes are one of the most difficult things to deal with in ballet, ballet is NOT easy at all. Try these three things:

1.- Get some (more if needed) padding. sometimes padding is not thick enough, I HIGHLY recommend GEL padding. Gel has a soft and cold feel for your toes to rest on while dancing. When dancing you must make sure you are doing it properly.

2.- Usually pointe shoes must be broken in before danced in too much. When my first pointe shoes were tried on, part of my foot bled. It did hurt, I wouldn’t tell my teacher because I knew it was normal. So I would say to look up ‘how to break in pointe shoes’ on YouTube. Or, bend your pointe shoe on the arch and step on the shank a little bit. Try some simple steps like tendu combinations, plies up to releve. and of course en pointe. I also did some Arabesques.

3.-What I did is, I have gel padding for my feet and i stuffed some more padding into my shoe and then it stays in the shoe every time.

4.- Sometime sit is just good to tell you’re teacher if nothing is working for you. All teachers know what to do. And one time my teacher convinced the store person to exchange my pointe shoes for others, because they knew eachother. ‘m not saying that you will have that happen but somehow, maybe you’ll luck out. :)

And remember, pointe shoes ALWAYS hurt at first, but it should NOT continue for much too long. Stella
