How do people lose shoes on the road?

I constantly see random shoes on the road and the freeway and I cannot imagine how people lose their shoes. Sometimes it’s just one, sometimes both, and they are men’s, women’s and children’s shoes. Do these people all drive jeeps with no doors and their shoes just fall off?
